While I was working on the layout of the new kitchen I discovered that I was going to have to move the sink cabinet over by about 8 inches. 8 inches is really not a lot of space for a cabinet, and a didn’t want it to be wasted space (I had had 2 upper cabinets that where 9 inches and found them to be a pain…more money than there worth kind of deal) so I came up with the idea of making a pull out for my knives and kitchen utensils.
I used to store all my utensils in a metal canister on the counter top but I feel that with all the open shelves, I would like to keep the stuff on the counter to a minimum. So building a pull out cabinet for all my utensils was the perfect idea (in my opinion) plus, I could store my knives on the other side – thus providing me with a place to store them.
And so the pull out was born.
I started by measuring everything up to figure out what I would need (I didn’t really want to spend much money on it) and what scraps I could use.
So I measured my pieces…
Cut them to size,
and drew a line down the center of each of the 4 boards.
From there I used my router to router out the lines, and my Kreg to drill the pocket holes to assemble the pieces.
I then screwed and glued it all together, and attached the pull out front.
I then cut a piece for the bottom to attache the wheels to, added the wheels and screwed and glued that piece to the pull out.
From there it was just a simple matter of letting everything dry, adding the pegs, and loading my cooking utensils on…
I plan on using a magnetic bar for my knives on the other side, instead of the hooks, as I think it will hold them more securely.
I’m also thinking about painting it white when I do the cabinet fronts….
What do you think?
